Mazda Minagi Concept : The upcoming CX-5 model

Published on March 9, 2011 in Geneva by Gilles Olivier

The replacement process of actual Mazda models will officially begin this week at the Geneva International Motor Show when the Mazda Minagi Concept will be introduced in a great world premiere.

Last year, this Hiroshima constructor shyly presented new structural approaches that were applied to this new vehicle and, eventually to mass produced vehicles to appear in the future. Among these new approaches, certain new technologies are applied:

KODO Design : New approach and stylistic philosophy
SKYACTIV-Chassis : High performance, lighter, more resistant
SKYACTIV-Body : Extreme rigidity and lightness
SKYACTIV-G : Gas engines, direct injection for less fuel consumption
SKYACTIV-D : Diesel engines with low compression ratios
SKYACTIV-Drive : Automatic high performance box
SKYACTIV-MT :Lighter and more compact manual box

The Mazda Demio will be the first vehicle to benefit from these new technical approaches. It will be offered for sale in Japan in the next few months. Here in Canada, this vehicle is called the Mazda2.

The Mazda Minagi Concept

At the culmination point of these innovative technologies, the Minagi concept announces the arrival of a compact SUV that should in all probability be called the CX-5 model.

Following the CX-9 et CX-7 models, this will be Mazda’s third SUV model.

If you don’t like the look of the smiling front grille on the current Mazda models, you will get an idea on what to expect of the new fascia on upcoming Mazda models...

Two birds with one stone

Photos currently being distributed by the manufacturer on this concept vehicle are perhaps an indication on the style direction taken for the future generation of the very popular Mazda 3 Sport models.
