Mercedes Sending G-Wagen Off With a V12-Powered Bang

If you’re much of a romantic, chances are that you quite enjoy the Mercedes Benz G-Class’ continued existence. Against all odds, the boxy, brutish SUV with solid axles and locking differentials has soldiered on (literally), remaining the ride of choice for stalwart suburban soccer moms and international defense forces alike.

But that’s all coming to end shortly, as tightening pedestrian safety standards and an aging chassis are conspiring against the popular and long-lived G-wagen. But Mercedes isn’t about to let it go gently into that good night, apparently. According to some reports, the iconic brand plans to send it off with a new AMG version that would see the installation of the brutal twin-turbo V12 powerplant from the top tier CL, SL, and S-class AMG models. Endowing the brick-on-wheels with 612 horsepower and 737 pound feet of torque, it would undoubtedly make for an impressive vehicle capable of covering all sorts of ground at a ridiculous pace. In fact, it’s such a good idea that it’s already been done, with AMG having already built a few such G-wagens for “special” clients, and tuning house Brabus also offering a model known as the G V12 S Biturbo.

Unless, apparently, you live in Canada. According to recent reports from Mercedes' staff, we Canadians can enjoy a bit more time with the seemingly immortal G-wagen. And since it won't be getting cancelled at all, we won't be enjoying the certain joy that would be a 737 foot-pound, hard core off road suv.
