Camaro 1LE to take on Boss 302
If you've been looking at Ford's Boss 302 with wanton lust, but can't bring yourself to usher a Blue Oval into the driveway, you might be interested in this: the new 1LE option package for the Camaro. So named for the hard-use package once fitted to police pursuit and race-ready Camaros of the 80s and 90s, the package includes some contrasting black aero pieces for the outside and a host of running gear updates underneath, such as uprated halfshafts, a Tremec six-speed manual gearbox, a 3.91:1 rear end ratio, larger sway bars, a strut tower brace, 20" wheels as well as the ZL1's higher capacity fuel pump, wheel bearings, shock mounts, toe links, and tires. If that's not enough to justify the added expense, GM is also throwing in the same dual-mode exhaust and power steering setup as the ZL1. According to GM, the car's already pulled over 1G on the skidpad, and is currently being scrutinized by the SCCA for inclusion in their Touring Class series.
The only question that remains is why rescue an obscure option package from the annals of General Motors' history when you've got the vastly more recognizable Z28 badge kicking around?
