Volvo S60 set to take on... the M3?!

If you've never heard of Polestar, you probably shouldn't take it too hard. A small firm offering factory-approved performance upgrades for Volvos of all shapes and sizes, they've done everything from making a 450 horsepower all-wheel drive C30s to apparently preparing a Volvo S60 equipped to take on the next-generation M3... and they've done it all with a minimum of fanfare.

Spotted under some vinyl camouflage, a test S60 has been repeatedly spotted around Europe, and its aggressively flared fenders and staggered wheel fitment certainly suggests a host of performance upgrades. With rumours circulating of somewhere between 350 and 400 horsepower underhood, the car is reputed to be a contender to the new M3 and even Mercedes' Atlas-strength C63 AMG. However, it doesn't seem much like the probably-permanently snowbound Swedish safety giant to produce a 400 horsepower rear-wheel drive sports coupe, so the smart money has been hedging its bets on one hell of an all-wheel drive system. However, seeing as neither Volvo nor Polestar are known for doing what's expected of them, in reality all bets are most certainly off until the car debuts.
