Mini Reconsidering Rocketman?

Published on June 16, 2012 in News by Dan Fritter

Although they might be owned by a German firm (arguably the most German of firms!) Mini hasn't forgotten their English roots... and those English roots just happen to be hosting the Olympics this year. So, in an effort to celebrate this, Mini has dusted off one of their most popular concepts: the Rocketman.

Initially prepared as a glimpse into what a subcompact from Mini would look like, that the Rocketman was the closest thing in size to a proper old-school Mini was a fact that didn't escape anyone, and made the tiny coupe an instant success on the auto show circuit. However, that wasn't enough to save it from the axe, and it wasn't long before BMW announced that it would never amount to anything more than the concept car it was.

But, never ones to miss an occasion, Mini has rolled out another Rocketman concept in preparation for the London Olympics; this one liveried in the blue, white and red colours of the Union Jack. A move that flies in the face of BMW's pronouncement of the Rocketman's demise, the car's (re)appearance begs the question: is it really dead?
