Polestar S60 concept surprises

A few weeks ago we told you about an upcoming Volvo S60 concept, put together by Polestar, that was slated to take the Scandinavian fight to the BMW M5. Well, it has arrived, and it looks every bit as promising as it sounded.

Using a massive turbocharger bolted to the familiar (and stupidly robust) six cylinder normally found under the S60 T6's bonnet, Polestar's S60 concept produces an astonishing 506 horsepower and 424 foot-pounds of torque; astonishing given those figures represent increases of 208 horsepower and 99 foot-pounds of torque over the stock output! Paired with what's an undoubtedly well-sorted Haldex all-wheel drive system, all that power will catapult the big blue sedan to 60 miles per hour in just 3.9 seconds, before reaching a top speed of over 186 miles per hour (300 kph to us)... and that's using a six-speed shifter and a proper foot-operated clutch.

Of course, with all that capacity for speed, it needs to handle well too, so Polestar has fitted their S60 with six-piston Brembos on 380mm discs, and has squished the 20mm-wider body down 30mm lower that it previously sat. The chassis, meanwhile, has been fortified with additional bracing, and benefits from superb Öhlins suspension at all four corners to ensure the 265-series tires and 19" wheels can do their best to maintain grip. All in, the whole shebang tips the scales at 206 pounds lighter than the existing car, and probably drives absolutely divinely.

We say probably, because as yet, there's only one available. Having been built for "one specific client," the concept is also being put forth to gauge response, with Polestar saying additional models could be built if demand warranted it. Here's hoping.
