The 2012 Subaru Impreza: Garage inspection

Published on September 13, 2012 in Mechanical by Guy Desjardins

The 2012 Subaru Impreza is new – or at least the base trim is. But the changes are nothing to write home about, as nothing major has been overhauled. The 2012 looks a whole lot like the previous version. That said, the trained eye will note several modifications to the body as well as redesigned lights in front and back. If you’re curious about the other changes, read the technical specs, as most are mechanical.

New visual signature

The new Impreza may seem bigger but, in actual fact, its dimensions have hardly changed. The vehicle is lower and narrower than the 2011 model, and yet it seems heftier. Is that a good thing? Well, it’s hard to say. To be sure, this change makes the Impreza look distinctly more solid, sporty and aggressive. The front and rear lights are more refined and the fenders have been beefed up.

Improved mechanics

The 2012 Impreza continues to rely on a Boxer engine, but this time the base trim has seen its capacity boosted to 2.0 litres. It also features a dual overhead cam and a new serpentine belt. The Impreza 2.0 has shed 70 kg, thanks mostly to the new engine but also to new plastic air intake ducts, which are lighter than the old aluminum ones. The muffler now points downward and is hidden behind the bumper.

Top marks

We headed to Nicolas Demers’ garage to take a closer look at the 2012 Subaru Impreza. The team of mechanics quickly concluded that all the changes to the vehicle were for the better. In general, the mechanical configuration is traditional and all parts are easily accessible – especially the oil filter, which is positioned at the top of the engine compartment. The vehicle’s underbelly also scored top marks for layout. However, some sections seem to lack plastic covers that would normally protect the parts from winter weather and salt. It was no surprise to find a double wishbone rear suspension in this kind of car. But drivers should plan for more detailed maintenance.
