Chrysler To Introduce 9-Speed Automatic Transmission Across Three 2013 Models

Chrysler's push towards adopting nine-speed automatic transmissions will see their installation in as many as three new models by the end of 2013.  According to a report by Bloomberg, Chrysler has tapped the Dodge Dart, the Jeep Liberty, and the Chrysler 200 as the first recipients of the new high tech gearboxes.

Why nine-speed transmissions?  Automakers, increasingly squeezed by ever-tightening fuel efficiency regulations, are seeking to develop gearboxes that can efficiently handle the widest possible range of driving conditions.  The more gears that are available, in general, the more capable a transmission is of balancing performance and frugality at the fuel pump.

Chrysler will be limiting its nine-speed automatics, which were developed in partnership with corporate parent Fiat, to its front-wheel and all-wheel drive models.  An eight-speed automatic is already available in rear-wheel drive platforms from Jeep and Chrysler, including the Grand Cherokee SUV and the Chrysler 300.  200,000 new nine-speed automatic transmissions in total will be installed in Chrysler vehicles over the course of the upcoming year.
