Oh, love. Oh, bliss..

“Without love, there is no life,” said a wise man.  Over a lifetime, so many things make their way into our hearts: women, men, children, pets, songs and, obviously, cars. For Valentine’s Day, we asked a few Car Guide employees to talk about the loves of their lives (the types with four wheels, as we try to steer clear of interpersonal relationships!).

Have a look at what our team had to say about the cars that have left their mark on their lives, whether it was a real relationship or just an imaginary one.  “Love,” explained another wise man, “is stronger than the police!”

1965 Ford Mustang Fastback

Looking at the models on the market today, I have to admit that I’ve got a crush on the Mercedes Benz C63 AMG Black Series. Oh, how I’d love to have a fling with this baby on the open road (one without potholes, please).

But beyond the crush is love. Deep love that originates in your very core, like the feeling I have for the 1965 Ford Mustang Fastback.

Sure, it’s a good 20 years older than I am, but it’s still a badass vehicle. It’s a rebel with a generous heart and the body of a god, even after all these years. You can’t say that about just any car. Other models come and go, but there will always be a special place in my heart for the Mustang Fastback. As Lana Del Rey used to sing, “I will love you ’till the end of time.”

Jeep Wrangler Rubicon

The love of my life, the one who will reside in my heart forever, is the Jeep Wrangler. Think about it: No vehicle can press deeper into the woods than Jeep Wrangler – with the top down. And the one who would be mine? A two-door Rubicon equipped with a winch to elegantly get us out of the most compromising of situations. From experience, I know that the ride would be rough on the highway and I’d cringe every time I had to fill it up. But I also know from experience that two or three spins of the steering wheel is all it would take to melt my heart all over again.

Aston Martin Vanquish

At the 2013 Montreal Auto Show, our eyes met from across the room and I instantly fell in love. Distinguished, beautiful, sexy. I couldn’t help but stare.

This car is perfectly designed. It has an aggressive style without having that obvious “look at me, I’m expensive” look. Carbon has been added under the doors and on its front treatment for a touch of excellence. For the same price as a house, I’d buy two. It’s a deal!

Audi R8

An R8 and its 50 Shades of Grey…

Normally, I would have fallen for an über-masculine machine , like the Land Rover LR4. But these days I find myself daydreaming about a white Audi R8. With its elegant and sporty lines, exceptional performances and the fact that it is something of a rarity on the road, this is a genuinely mysterious and sexy car. What’s more, even if there’s a snow storm on February 14th, you could still have fun with it, thanks to its all-wheel drive. Ladies, talk to Christian Grey about it!

Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GT

Summer Love
It seems like only yesterday. I found her in the classifieds. When I saw her coming down the street, I could not believe my eyes. The nine-year-old Bertone bodywork did not show its age; it was clearly not winter-driven. My god, she was beautiful! To this day, any Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GT from the sixties will still turn heads and fetch serious money from collectors.

Behind the wheel, I understood the meaning of handling, four-wheel disc brakes, heel and toe downshifting and a gear lever that falls readily at hand. Unfortunately, summer ended and I was forced to choose between a sensuously beautiful Italian and returning to school. Wisdom, the less passionate but more reasonable road, prevailed.

That was nearly forty years ago, yet I have not forgotten my Giulia. Nor will I ever.

James Bond’s 1964 Aston Martin DB5

Even though I’m a big fan of British secret agent James Bond, I never in a million years imagined that, one day, I would actually have my photo taken next to the same 1964 Aston Martin DB5 driven by Sean Connery in Goldfinger .

Just last month, at the Detroit Motor Show, I had the immense pleasure of getting up close and personal with this legendary car. Plus, a gorgeous Bond Girl was there to describe this exceptional vehicle to us.

It was no other than that very same Aston Martin, complete with the most cutting-edge gadgets for its era. This vehicle was sold last year for a whopping $5 million.

1996 Dodge Viper

I have always been in love with the Dodge Viper.  Ever since it was launched in 1992, it had my attention, but it was really the introduction of the GTS coupe model in 1996 that cemented my love for this automobile.  The beautiful, flowing lines, the utilitarian interior, the eight-liter V10 under the hood, and the fact that the vehicle was so unapologetically brutal and difficult to drive at the limit have always appealed to me.  The most recent model – introduced last year – erased my disappointment with the third generation's more angular lines, as it revived the menacing good looks of the second-generation GTS edition.

Dodge Challenger SRT8

It was love at first sight. With its charm and chiselled physique, the Dodge Challenger SRT8 offered to take me for a spin. When I accepted the invitation on this sunny day, I was fully aware that I was committing adultery!

Comfortably behind its wheel, I felt great and totally free. The vehicle exuded power and the only thing that held me back was the thought that the experience might be cut short by the police. I was so happy that I never wanted the day to end.

When I got back home, I had trouble saying goodbye to it. But I had to be reasonable. I simply did not have the means to buy a Challenger SRT8. My heart was torn to pieces. Fortunately, my Honda Civic was still waiting for me (and, fortunately, it forgave me for having cheated on it)!

Audi R8 Spyder

There’s no doubt about it, my dream car is the Audi R8 Spyder. A red one. This vehicle tantalizes my senses and sets my heart on fire, especially when I think about taking it out on a summer night, with the wind in my hair and the rich sound of its V10 filling my ears. This speed machine is right up there with the world’s top exotic cars.
