Maserati Ghibli: First Official Pictures
The first Maserati Ghibli was produced from 1966 to 1973. It was an elegant sports coupe built as a rival to the era’s exotic offerings from DeTomaso, Ferrari and Lamborghini. A second generation wearing the same name was sold from 1992 to 1997.
The coupe was named after a sand storm that regularly blasts the Egyptian desert.
The Ghibli name will soon resurface with the impending world premiere of a pretty sport sedan during the Shangai Auto Show.
Not to be confused with the Quattroporte, the new car will be more compact than Maserati’s flagship sedan.
Today, the Italian manufacturer showed on the internet the first official pictures of its new luxurious four-door.
This will be the second sedan for the trident-bearing brand. This premium-level car will go head to head with the likes of the Audi A6, BMW 5-Series, Jaguar XF and Mercedes-Benz E-Class.
Three V6 engines
The car will be powered by three different turbocharged 3.0 litre V6 engines.
Purists may cringe, but one of them will be a diesel, the very first Maserati oil burner.
Whatever the engine, power will be sent through an 8-speed automatic transmission.
While “base” Maserati Ghiblis will be rear-wheel drive sedans, it will be possible to opt for the Q4 all-wheel drive system exclusive to Maserati, at an additional cost.
