2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Preview

Mercedes-Benz has provided journalists the world over with a sneak peek at the 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class. The German luxury brand's full-size flagship sedan has undergone a complete redesign as part of an effort to retain its dominance of the uber-luxury segment.

Appearance-wise, the next-generation Mercedes-Benz S-Class widens out the current model's stance with a broader grille and beefier character lines on the front fenders and side sheet metal. That width is more than just a visual cue, as the car is bigger in almost every dimension when compared to the 2013 edition (save for wheelbase), but it weighs in at roughly 150 kilograms lighter.

Drivetrains will include a 4.7-liter, twin-turbo V-8 (455 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque), as well as a as-yet-disclosed AMG variant. An eight-speed automatic transmission is standard, all-wheel drive is optional, and the car will be capable of reaching 100 km/h in less than five seconds. A trick suspension system, called Magic Body Control, will make use of a forward-facing camera to setup the vehicle's dampers for upcoming terrain.

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz S550 goes on sale this coming September.
