Current Mini Coupe and Roadster to be Discontinued
MINI is planning to revamp its lineup of vehicles and won’t continue the familiar coupe and roadster versions.
The British brand has two new front wheel drive architectures that it intends to base 18 new models off of within the next five years. The new sports cars will be entirely different than the current lineup, sharing no body panels at all with the current generation though we can assume will have a MINI look and feel to them.
Initially, both coupe and convertible forms will be available with Cooper S and JCW trims for each. All future MINI models moving forward will use variations of the TwinPower 2.0L turbo 4-cylnder powerplants. They could go on sale by late 2015 or early 2016.
MINI only sells about 15,000 coupes and roadsters each year which represents about a 20% market share of the segment. BMW has expressed a desire to make the MINI products a little more interesting given the low volumes.
