Nissan to Open Plant in Burma
Japanese car manufacturer Nissan has announced the upcoming construction of a new factory in Burma, where it will produce its Sunny car in 2015.
The company said Friday that the Burmese authorities have accepted its proposal of a joint venture with Tan Chong Motors on August 15.
Burma has opened its doors to foreign investment since political reforms begun in 2011 and have ended its international isolation.
Nissan and Tan Chong said in a statement that the first plant will employ 300 people and will eventually produce more than 10,000 cars per year.
No financial details were provided, but the industrial complex of 80 acres would be the largest car factory in Burma.
Tan Chong Motor Holdings is a large holding company established in Malaysia.
