Nissan Aims to Supplement Rearview Mirror With Camera Technology

Have you ever had the annoyance of a tall passenger sitting right in the sight-line of your rearview mirror? How about a sports car that had almost no rear visibility? Nissan thinks it has a solution to this and it’s called the Smart rearview mirror.

At the touch of a button, the Smart rearview mirror would be able to convert itself into an integrated LCD and display a high-resolution feed from outside the vehicle. The camera would be available anytime instead of only when the vehicle is in reverse. An additional advantage would be the ability to enhance the image in a low light situations.

Nissan plans to introduce this technology at some level by 2015 but no word yet on how wide this implementation will be. In Japan, the feature can be added as an option via the dealer as early as this spring.
