Mazda MX-5: the Past, and the Future
The little MX-5 celebrates its 25th year on the market in 2014. When it was launched in 1989 at the Chicago Auto Show, it was named Miata. The little roadster got all the spotlight that year, and its newfound popularity never diminished.
Today, in New York, Mazda presents the 25th Anniversary Edition. Only 100 of these cars will be sold in Canada, all painted in a beautiful Soul Red Mica. As an added bonus, Mazda throws in some performance parts for added power. This MX-5 starts at $40,925.
This is the last hurrah for this version. In the near future (my bets are for sometime during Autumn) a new generation will be unveiled. For now, Mazda will tease us with details from the next-gen chassis, which will be lighter, stiffer and smaller than the current MX-5. This is the first front-engined, rear-wheel drive chassis to benefit from SKYACTIV technologies. We are being told of numerous improvements, like an engine placed closer to the center of the car, a lower gravity center. and even a 100 kilo weight reduction.
