Volkswagen Will Build the Beetle Dune

Volkswagen surprised everyone at the Detroit Auto Show with the Beetle Dune Concept. While it may only be a regular Beetle on stilts with a wing-mounted ski rack, it looked fun to drive. The concept was painted in a flashy metallic orange paint, and it attracted a big crowd. But, we were confident that Volkswagen would not build such a car.

They just proved us wrong. In a very non-German move, Volkswagen decided to throw all logic away. They will launch a production version of the Beetle Dune!

The concept was powered by a 2 liter turbo engine turning the front wheels, and the production version will likely have the same powerplant. It won’t be able to cross harsh terrain, but VW is quick to mention that it is not an off-road vehicle, it will only look like one. For the rest, the standard equipment should closely match the standard Beetle.

Oh and if you like the sun, the Dune will also be available as a convertible! The raised Beetle should be available in the first months of 2016, and while there has been no official talk regarding pricing, we can expect it to cost a few thousand dollars more than the base car.

During this reveal, VW also mentioned that the Dune won’t be the only special Beetle. A full lineup of their round little hatchbacks is supposedly on its way…
