Crossovers/SUVs now More Popular than Sedans

When the first sport utility vehicles came out, they quickly gained a following, with their cavernous luggage space and added sense of safety. However, we knew that the trend would eventually end, since these vehicles also drank prodigious amounts of fuel.

But they evolved, adapted. They lost their mostly unused off-road capabilities, and got smaller to be more efficient. They have now become crossovers.

And the market absolutely loves them. In fact, it loves them so much that for the first time, SUV and crossover sales have overtaken sedan sales... In the US, at least.

36.5% of all vehicles sold are classified as crossovers/SUVs, while sedans fall into second place with 35.4%.

A few important models (like the Jeep Cherokee, the Nissan Rogue and the Chevrolet Tahoe/GMC Yukon) have been released recently, which may have helped sales soar to these heights. Also, it is important to note that manufacturers are now looking into novel ways to diminish these relatively large vehicles' thirst for fuel, which in turn attracts more customers.
