Renovo Motors: The Electric Shelby

Published on August 19, 2014 in News by Frédérick Boucher-Gaulin

Seeing a Shelby Daytona Coupe on the lawn of the prestigious Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance is not an uncommon occurrence. People will often eagerly wait for these cars to start up so they can listen to the mighty Ford engine living under the hood. However, those hoping to hear a symphony for V8 in C Major were disappointed when this particular Daytona powered up, since it runs on electric power!

This new car is the Renovo Coupe, and is essentially a Shelby Daytona Coupe with an electric powertrain. A pair of Axial Flux motors sit where the V8 used to be, and the power is stored in 740-volt lithium-ion batteries. There is only one gear in the transmission, allowing for uninterrupted torque to be sent to the rear wheels. And speaking of torque, this configuration gives some pretty wild power figures: 500 horsepower, and 1000 pound-feet of torque!

The press release also gives us a few other interesting numbers: 0-100 km/h takes 3.4 seconds, the car’s range is about 160 kilometers, and it is possible to quickly recharge it in 30 minutes. A regular charge will take about 5 hours.

The manufacturer hopes to start deliveries around the beginning of 2015. There is no mention of price, but since the Renovo Coupe was unveiled at Pebble Beach, it probably won’t come cheap…
