10 Speeds For The New Ford Mustang

Published on August 22, 2014 in News by Frédérick Boucher-Gaulin

I remember the first time I had the opportunity to drive a vehicle with 10 speeds… It was a Peugeot bicycle. I vividly remember thinking: ‘’Why do I have to shift through so many gears? I’m glad cars will never have more than five or six speeds!’’ This was when the majority of automatic cars had only 4 speeds, and manuals were only starting to get a sixth…

Back to 2014, when Corvettes and Porsche 911s offer seven-speed manual gearboxes, and some automatic transmissions are now equipped with nine forward ratios…

However, it would seem that Ford will be the first manufacturer to crack the 10-speed barrier (in passenger vehicles, at least), since the Dearborn manufacturer will supposedly launch a 10 speed automatic in the next few years.

The first application will probably be in pickup trucks and other large vehicles (Lincoln will supposedly offer them at some point), before eventually being adopted in the Mustang.

However, this won’t happen in the next year (we hope), so you can still buy your automatic 2015 Mustang without fear of seeing your car become obsolete the next year (unlike the automatic transmission-equipped 2014 Corvettes!).
