BMW Light & Charge: A Brilliant Idea For Charging

Published on November 11, 2014 in Technology/Autonomous Vehicles by Frédérick Boucher-Gaulin

One of the ideas presented at the Eurocities conference in Munich came from BMW. Their concept is a brilliant idea that, if implemented, would drastically increase the number of electric car chargers in congested cities.

Instead of spending huge amounts of money equipping each street with its very own dedicated charger, BMW had the idea of using something that was already there: the street lights. Instead of using inefficient light bulbs, they will now rely on LEDs. Since these don’t draw as much power, the rest can be used to recharge a car via a station lower on the pole.

And contrary to a lot of futuristic ideas, this one will actually be used. The city of Munich will try the lights out in a few spots around town to judge their efficiency and to see how many times a day they are used.
