The winter tires for SUVs and light trucks that we evaluated are designed to offer good traction on ice or in snow, and a measure of versatility depending on the model.
The higher the overall score, the more versatile the tire in question in terms of performance on ice and in snow.
All the winter tires evaluated here meet winter driving requirements and comply with Ministère des Transports du Québec requirements under Bill 42, since they are marked with the snowflake-and-mountain pictogram.* They are available for most of the SUVs and pickups on the market.
*Important: Until December 15, 2014, truck or SUV tires marked “LT”` (for Light Truck) can be considered suitable for winter driving. From that date, however, the LT marking will no longer suffice. LT tires on passenger vehicles will also have to be marked with the pictogram or fitted with studs.
This means that if you buy tires marked “AT” or “LT” for a minivan or a light truck, they will not be usable in winter unless they are marked with the snowflake-and-mountain symbol, or studded.
