2015 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV: The Rechargeable Crossover

Published on January 15, 2015 in Montreal by Jean-Charles Lajeunesse

Shown at the Mondial de Paris last fall, the all-wheel drive Outlander PHEV has finally arrived on our shores. This SUV was designed from the start to receive an internal combustion engine and a rechargeable hybrid drivetrain. The 121 horsepower four-cylinder gasoline engine automatically powers the generator or the front wheels through an electro-mechanical multimode unit. The plug-in hybrid can operate in electric-only mode at speeds of up to 120 km/h. In series-hybrid mode, the vehicle is driven by the electric motors while the gas engine recharges the batteries. In parallel-hybrid mode, the gas engine powers the front wheels while the front and rear electric motors provide assistance. Mitsubishi indicates an electric range of approximately 50 km and fuel efficiency as high as 1.9 l/100 km under certain conditions. Cargo capacity is about 20 litres less than its gasoline-only counterpart and recharging the lithium-ion batteries takes about 5 hours at 230 V.
