BMW X3 And X4 M?
In a recent interview at the Detroit Auto Show, BMW’s M division director shared some interesting details about what we can expect in the near future.
First of all, the M2 is coming; there have been no official announcements yet, but prototypes have been seen roaming around Europe for a while now. We just have to wait and see.
An eventual all-wheel drive system was also mentioned, especially for some of their most powerful vehicles, like the M5 sedan and M6 coupe. Since the next iteration of these cars will only get more and more power, an AWD system would be useful to make sure the slightest pressure on the throttle won’t turn your expensive rear tires into smoke. However, BMW won’t make a true 50/50 AWD system; the front wheels will only be used to keep the back end in line.
There also seems to be rumours of an upcoming M version of the X3 and X4 crossovers. According to the manufacturer, there seems to be a business case for these vehicles; judging by the number of X5 and X6 Ms that we see on the road, we can’t help but agree.
Finally, there is a possibility that we could see M engines equipped with electric turbochargers in the coming years. This would not only boost performance, but also enable the use of smaller engines, like four-cylinder mills.
