Borgward's Glorious Return Will Be At Geneva

At the upcoming Geneva International Motor Show we will witness the revival of one of the oldest brands in Germany. Almost 55 years after its collapse, Borgward will rise up again in the automotive world.

Now, if you are not a walking car encyclopedia, you probably don't know who or what Borgward is. Launched in 1919, the brand started out building small 3-wheeled delivery vehicles, useful in post-war Germany. In later years, Borgward started building larger and more varied vehicles, eventually branching out into the luxury market. During WWII, many of Germany's industries were used to build military equipment, but Borgward survived by building their little trikes. In 1954, the brand launched the Isabella, a two-door vehicle that was available in coupe, estate, convertible and sedan versions.

In 1961, the brand folded, victim of financial difficulties. In 2008, the grandson of the original founder decided to restart Borgward.

Apart from the short above video, where we can see some of the brand's accomplishments of the last century, we don't know much about this revival. We have to assume that they will return to the luxury coachwork segment, where it's much easier to get a foothold, rather than the high-volume market.

We will see what Borgward will stand for in the next century at the Geneva Auto Show.
