The Sun Sets On The Volkswagen Eos
If I were to ask you to name a luxury German hardtop convertible, you would probably go for the BMW 3 Series, of maybe the 911 Targa (if you know your Porsches). However, there is another one that has flown under the radar for the last few years: the Volkswagen Eos, direct descendant of the VW Golf Cabrio. If our sources are correct, we can expect this small car to disappear at the end of 2015.
The Eos was not a bad car. Based on the Golf platform, it had sporty looks, a proven architecture, a retractable hardtop and a large array of gadgets.
However, the convertible market has been dwindling; in the 9 years of the Eos’ lifespan, sales went from 1,013 in 2007 to 459 in 2014. The decision to abandon such a niche car is not illogical; furthermore, no replacement is planned. The fact that it started at over $40,000 (for what is essentially a topless Golf) might not have helped sales.
If you were looking for a convertible for next spring, take the time to go to a VW dealership. While the Eos might have an MSRP of $42,990, a motivated salesman might offer you a significant rebate to get one out of their inventory…
