A New Chevrolet Malibu In New York

Published on March 12, 2015 in New York by Frédérick Boucher-Gaulin

The Chevrolet Malibu doesn’t have the best reputation amongst its rivals; while the name was originally used on the range-topping models of the Chevelle lineup, the only thing this name evocates now is the car you will likely end up with if you select the ‘’midsize’’ option at your local rental agency.

The current Malibu was launched in 2013, and was updated 18 months later. It received new styling (among other things) to make it look more like the larger Impala and Traverse.

This is why we were surprised to learn that Chevrolet will launch an all-new Malibu at the upcoming New York Auto Show. Since sales of the Malibu were never up to par with its Japanese competitors, we can understand that the manufacturer wants to give their midsize sedan a fighting chance.

We don’t know much about the new car yet, but we learned that the 2016 Malibu will weigh 136 kg less than the current version, which should help fuel consumption. A quick look at the teaser shot that Chevrolet sent us shows a more angular shape, and we even think it looks like a coupe.

We will learn more at the New York Auto Show. The official launch is scheduled for April 1st… Let’s hope Chevy isn’t playing a trick on us!
