5 Million EcoBoosts: That's A Lot Of Turbos...

In 2009 the first vehicle to be equipped with a turbocharged EcoBoost engine, the Ford Taurus SHO, rolled off the line at one of the brand’s assembly plants. The 3.5-litre engine pumped out 365 horsepower while offering the kind of fuel economy that we have come to expect from a V6. That year, 14,439 of the engines were built.

Ford’s EcoBoost technology is quite simple, in theory: take one or more turbochargers and bolt them onto a smaller displacement engine to give performance approaching that of a larger mill, but with improved fuel economy.

Today, this technology has reached an important milestone: the burgundy 2015 Focus shown above is the five-millionth car to be equipped with an EcoBoost powerplant (it’s a 1-litre three-cylinder unit, in case you were wondering!).

2015 is also the first year where each offering in the Ford passenger vehicle lineup can be had with an EcoBoost engine: from the Fiesta to the F-150 to the Expedition and even the Mustang, you can get your Ford with a turbo.
