In addition to the recently announced 6.2 upgrade for the Tesla Model S, Elon Musk also talked about an upcoming update which will include a very sought-after piece of technology; with the 7th edition of the operating system, the electric sedan will pretty much drive itself.

According to Tesla’s CEO, the autonomous driving system is good enough to steer the car from Los Angeles to San Francisco without requiring any driver input; the driver just needs to enter the destination into the GPS and guide the car to the freeway, the computer takes care of the rest. However, it can’t cope with streets, as the technology isn’t there yet, and the law actually prevents it.

Even better, you can now actually ‘’summon’’ your Tesla from its parking spot; with a simple command from your phone, the car will drive itself to you! However, Mr. Musk pointed out that this should not be used on a public road, since a vehicle that drives itself is illegal…

In addition to the autonomous driving features, upgrade 7 will also come with a complete user interface overhaul. Not only is it needed because of these recent additions, but there was also some mention that there might be some future changes in the way Model S drivers interact with their cars.
