2016 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV: A Facelift And New Tech

Last year, Mitsubishi announced that its Outlander PHEV hybrid SUV would be visually tweaked for 2016. After seeing more than a few leaked pictures, we finally got the chance to see the whole vehicle today.

Looking pretty much like its gas-powered cousins, the Outlander PHEV differentiates itself with a new fascia, which we saw for the first time on the Concept-S shown last year. It has shorter headlights and large chrome bars, which give it a more futuristic look. The SUV also gets new colours, like Quartz Brown or Pearl Ruby Black, which is exclusive to the PHEV model.

The SUV is now more fuel-efficient than ever; its hybrid drivetrain was optimized, meaning it’s 8% more efficient and its total range has increased by a whopping 600 metres.

A large array of safety systems have been added, including a multiple-angle view (with different cameras around the Outlander) and a system that prevents the vehicle from moving forward –even when the accelerator is pressed– if it detects something in front of it.

The 2016 Outlander PHEV will launch in Japan in July, and it will then be introduced progressively to the rest of the world.
