Each year, a panel of experts (our own Marc Lachapelle is part of it) votes and decides which engine is the most worthy of receiving an Engine of the Year award. For this year, there are 12 categories; most of them are split by displacement (less than a litre, 1 to 1.4 litres, 1.4 to 1.8 litres, 1.8 to 2 litres, 2 to 2.5 litres, 2.5 to 3 litres, 3 to 4 litres and over 4 litres), and there are also awards for the Green Engine and the Performance Engine of the Year.

Here are this year’s winners:

Green engine of the year goes, unsurprisingly, to Tesla’s electric system. The new engine of the year is the i8’s powertrain, while the performance award was given to Ferrari’s V8.

And from among all these, the 2015 Engine of the Year trophy was awarded to BMW’s electric-hybrid powerplant.
