Detroit Electric SP:01 - A New Electric Roadster

If you fell in love with Tesla’s first car (the Roadster), but couldn’t quite manage to save enough money to get one, you’re in luck. Another automaker has started building an electric sports car based on the Exige: meet the Detroit Electric SP:01.

Two versions of the car will be offered. The Pure will use an electric motor with 204 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque, which is enough to send the little car to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds, while also giving it a range of 288 kilometres.

The Performance variant, as its name implies, has more punch. Its motor has been pushed to 286 horsepower, which gives it a 0 to 100 km/h time of 3.9 seconds. This version also has a mode selector that can limit the power sent to the motor, giving it the same range as the lesser version.

The SP:01 will be sold around the world before the end of 2015, at a price that has yet to be disclosed.
