2017 Mercedes-Benz GLC 350 e 4MATIC: A First Rechargeable Hybrid

The Car Guide recently attended the worldwide launch of the brand new 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLC, the worthy successor of the GLK, the Stuttgart-based manufacturer's compact SUV. For 2016, there will be just one version offered, but the next few years will see several other versions introduced, including a diesel and a rechargeable hybrid. We're also hoping for an AMG, but thus far, nothing has been announced.

The plug-in hybrid version, called the GLC 350 e 4Matic, will arrive in 2017 and mark the first time that Mercedes has offered this type of drivetrain in Canada. It will be powered by a 2.0-litre 211-horsepower gasoline engine working in tandem with an 85-kW electric motor that adds 116 more horsepower.

Power will be transmitted to all four wheels by way of a seven-speed automatic transmission that shifts gears to optimize the available power at all times—even in electric mode.

Despite the fact that the battery pack encroaches on the cargo space, the manufacturer is promising a huge reduction in fuel consumption, specifically 2.6L/100km. With a full charge, you’ll be able to travel approximately 34 kilometres in all-electric mode, meaning zero emissions.

A lithium ion battery feeds the electric motor, offering an 8.7-kWh capacity, and takes four hours to charge on a domestic outlet or in two and a half hours on a 240-volt outlet.

Of course, the success of this version will depend largely on the price. If it’s too high, this vehicle won’t be able to nab the interest of enough buyers. The more environmentally friendly GLC puts greater distance between Mercedes-Benz and its main rivals in the luxury compact SUV segment.
