Nissan Micra Cup: August 2nd Race

Published on August 2, 2015 in Racing by Marc-André Gauthier

Update: The disqualification of Stefan Rzadzinski was revoked, meaning the ICI Pneus team driver finishes in first place, in front of Olivier Bédard and Tharanoj Thanasitnitike. We'll update overall driver rankings once they are available. Stefan Rzadzinski was initially disqualified for an inconformity in the electrical system of his car, according to the series rules. However, he received a fine instead, because it was his first offense, and will keep his first-place finish.

What a show!

The Nissan Micra Cup gets more exciting with every race. With the championship moving forward, emotions are running high, and drivers are taking more noticeable risks to gain a few positions before crossing the finish line.

During the eighth race out of 12 on August 2nd, during the GP3R weekend in Trois-Rivières, two drivers unfortunately rolled their cars. Combined with multiple fender benders, the race had to be restarted twice. In the end, the cars had time to complete less than 10 laps.

Despite these incidents, the final lap was pretty exciting. Olivier Bédard, who raced to victory the day before, was determined to win ahead of Stefan Rzadzinski, who finished 2nd during Saturday’s race.

Bédard was about to pass him, but had to watch out for Nissan’s factory pilot, the young Taiwanese Tharanoj Thanasitnitike, who was driving somewhat recklessly.

In the end, Rzadzinski finished the race, but was disqualified, thus giving Bédard the highest step on the podium and a double-win weekend.

Tharanoj Thanasitnitike finished second, while driver and automotive designer Antoine Bessette took third place.

After the GP3R weekend, Olivier Bédard and Tharanoj Thanasitnitike share the championship lead with 284 points, followed by Stefan Rzadzinski with 218 points. The other Nissan factory pilot, Indian Abhinay Bikkani, currently holds fourth place with 173 points.
