The newly redesigned hybrid version of the midsize Sonata sedan will be on sale this month at Hyundai dealerships, and will be priced just below the $30K threshold.

It features a direct-injected 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, an electric motor and a six-speed automatic transmission for a combined output of 193 horsepower. Thanks to the packaging of the battery pack, the 2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid boasts a class-leading 380 litres of trunk space.

Compared to the regular Sonata, the hybrid version benefits from unique grille, bumpers, front fenders, side mouldings and alloy wheels. It slips through the wind with a drag coefficient of 0.24 – that means it’s very aerodynamic.

Three trim levels are offered for the 2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. The base trim starts at $29,649 and includes 16-inch alloy wheels, a blind spot monitor, LED taillights, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, an intelligent key with push-button start, a 5.0-inch touchscreen and a rearview camera.

The $33,799 Limited trim gets bigger alloy wheels, a panoramic sunroof, leather upholstery, a power driver’s seat, heated rear seats, a 60/40 split folding rear seatback and a navigation system with 8.0-inch touchscreen. The $37,499 Ultimate trim features bi-xenon headlights, high beam assist, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, rear parking sonar, ventilated front seats and a nine-speaker sound system.

Competitors include the Toyota Camry Hybrid, the Ford Fusion Hybrid, the Honda Accord Hybrid and the Kia Optima Hybrid, with base prices ranging from about $29,000 to $31,000.
