A Recall For Old Mazdas
Transport Canada just published a recall targeting no less than 232,000 Mazdas. On a wide range of models, it seems that a problem in the ignition switch can cause a short-circuit. If that were to happen, smoke can pour out of the steering column, and in some case, fire may even spread to the rest of the car. Since this is a problem that originates from a design oversight, your dealership will repair your car and fit it with a new ignition switch.
However, there is a fair chance you've never actually been to your nearest Mazda dealership with your car, because the affected models are from between 1989 and 1998!
Affected cars are the Mazda 323 (1990-1995), 626 (1993-1998), 929 (1993 and 1994), MPV (1989-1998), MX-3 (1992-1996) and Protege (1990-1996). If you own one of these cars, now would be a good time to check in with your Mazda dealership and let them know you exist... Because chances are that your car went through a few owners before ending up in your driveway.
