2016 Porsche GT3 RS And Cayman GT4: We’re Driving Them This Week

This week we are driving two alluring new Porsche models near their North American headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia, and they are both designed to appeal to racetrack aficionados.

The 2016 Cayman GT4 features race-inspired aerodynamic bodywork, and sits 30 mm lower than the standard Cayman.

The mid-engine sports car is powered by a 3.8-litre six cylinder that delivers 385 horsepower, with a claimed zero to 100 km/h time of 4.4 seconds. For true track enthusiasts, the engine is mated only to a six-speed manual transmission with a rev-matching function for smooth downshifts.

The adaptive suspension is firmer to handle the added stresses of track driving, and steering geometry is adjustable to alter the handling characteristics for different racetracks. To further sharpen the steering the car is equipped with torque vectoring and a locking differential.

We’ll also be getting behind the wheel of the 2016 911 GT3 RS. This is the real deal for track-day enthusiasts, with a larger, 4.0-litre six that develops an eye-popping 500 horsepower.

Aside from the track-ready suspension, torque vectoring and dynamic engine mounts, handling is enhanced by rear-wheel steering.

In case you’re not yet convinced of the GT3’s racing pedigree, once inside you’ll find carbon-fibre bucket seats, an optional Sport Chrono package with data acquisition system, and a roll cage.

Being such track-oriented cars, Porsche has invited us to take them for a spin around the fast Road Atlanta racecourse. They’ve also invited us to bring our own helmets.
