AJAC’s Canadian Car Of The Year Awards Announces Its Category Winners For 2016
At a press conference in Toronto today, the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada unveiled the winners in the nine vehicle categories that make up this year’s Canadian Car of the Year Awards program.
These are the results of four days of intensive testing in October at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park in Clarington, Ontario. A group of almost 80 Canadian journalists gathered at the event to drive 41 new or significantly improved vehicles back to back, and voted on the best new car or truck in nine distinct categories.
In the Best New Small Car category, the finalists were the Honda Civic Sedan, the Toyota Yaris Sedan and the Volkswagen Jetta 1.4 TSI. The winner is the Honda Civic.
In the Best New Family Car category, the finalists were the Chevrolet Volt, the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid and the Volkswagen Golf Sportwagon 1.8 TSI. The winner is the Volkswagen Golf Sportwagon.
In the Best New Sports/Performance (under $50,000) category, the finalists were the Mazda MX-5, the MINI John Cooper Works 3 Door and the Volkswagen Golf R. The winner is the Volkswagen Golf R.
In the Best New Sports/Performance (over $50,000) category, the finalists were the Cadillac ATS-V, the Ford Shelby GT350 and the Mercedes-AMG C 63 S Sedan. The winner is the Mercedes-AMG C 63 S Sedan.
In the Best New Prestige/Performance category, the finalists were the Cadillac CTS-V, the Mercedes-AMG GT S and the Porsche Cayman GT4. The winner is the Mercedes-AMG GT S.
In the Best New SUV/CUV (under $35,000) category, the finalists were the Honda HR-V, the Jeep Renegade and the Mazda CX-3. The winner is the Mazda CX-3.
In the Best New SUV/CUV (between $35,000 and $60,000) category, the finalists were the Honda Pilot, the Hyundai Tucson and the Kia Sorento. The winner is the Kia Sorento.
In the Best New SUV/CUV (over $60,000) category, the finalists were the Lincoln MKX, the Mercedes-Benz GLE 350d 4MATIC Coupe and the Volvo XC90. The winner is the Volvo XC90.
In the Best New Pickup category, the finalists were the Chevrolet Silverado, the GMC Canyon Diesel and the Toyota Tacoma 4x4 Double Cab. The winner is the Chevrolet Silverado.
These category winners are all eligible for the overall 2016 Canadian Car of the Year and 2016 Canadian Utility of the Year titles, which will be announced at the Toronto Auto Show next February.
