In a few hours, we’ll be driving the 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLS

The Car Guide is heading to Germany and Austria to get a first crack at the Mercedes-Benz GLS large SUV, better known as the GL. In the last months, Mercedes has been modifying the nameplates of its models and the GL-Class was the last one with its “old” name. As it’s now time to refresh the GL, might as well change the name too. As it rides on the S-Class’ platform, it’s only normal that it was renamed the GLS.

Adding the “S” also means a new and more modern front end as well as some changes to the vehicle’s dashboard. More importantly, the automatic transmission now includes nine gears in the GLS 350d, GLS 450 and GLS 550 versions, and there’s also a Dynamic Select knob that cycles through five different drive modes. Every version except the GLS 450 gets an output increase.
