Herbie Goes On Sale
The Volkswagen Beetle is one of the world's most recognized vehicles. Its round shape, and the fact that it's been built for the better part of a century, contributed to its immense success.
One of the most famous Beetles of them all is Herbie; the little Volkswagen starred in five movies, a TV series and even a recent reboot starring Lindsay Lohan.
While over a hundred Bugs were used in those movies, only one is the real Herbie. It's a 1963 model-year version that was the hero car, meaning it did the close-up scenes as well as some driving. It is recognizable because of its lettered Goodyear tires and its unique paint job, but it also features some hidden upgrades: for example, a complex system of chains and sprockets connects the steering column to another set of controls in the back seat: this way, the car gave the impression that it could drive itself!
Recently, this particular car was put on sale: Bonham Auctions had the task of finding a buyer for the legendary Beetle.
With a final bid of US $86,250, Herbie just became the most expensive Volkswagen Beetle ever sold. The lucky buyer wishes to remain anonymous, but we hope he won't hide the car away; this little coupe deserves to be where people can see and appreciate it.
