The Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas has become a popular event for car manufacturers and their third-party collaborators who seek to show off their upcoming and future technologies. This year, BMW filled their stand with a slew of promising safety and connected-car features.

The BMW i Vision Interaction is a concept car based on the i8 plug-in hybrid that boasts head-up display, an instrument cluster with 3D display as well as a 21-inch panorama display. The content on these screens will adjust to the driving situation, while the brand’s Air Touch technology uses sensors to recognize hand movements. In short, according to BMW, the panorama display can be operated like a touchscreen without actually having to, uh, touch it.

In the BMW i Vision Interaction, physical controls and switchgear are minimalistic, and three drives modes are offered: Drive (the driver does all the work), Assist (with light assistance systems intervention) and Auto Mode (full autonomous mode).

In addition to enhanced communication between car, smart home and user with the help of a handheld device or a smart watch, a Mobility Mirror can be hung on the wall of the our house. It can display info such as a personal calendar, mobility options, energy status of the smart home, charge status of the connected EV and weather forecasts.

Bumper Detect is a feature that detects if the parked vehicle has been bumped – and is being tampered with – and activates a surround camera system. Not only will the bumped vehicle’s owner receive a warning message, but he or she can request images taken from the cameras.

Also presented is a system composed of three cameras that are united on a display that replaces a conventional rearview mirror. According to BMW, their Mirrorless technology covers a larger viewing angle, eliminates blind spots and can also react to hazards with yellow warning icons.
