2016 Cadillac CT6: V8 TT On The Way
Although 404 horsepower from a 3.0-litre, twin-turbo V6 is more than respectable, there were some Cadillac fans who felt disappointed by the lack of a V8 option in the 2016 CT6 sedan during its debut model year. This feeling was compounded by statements that had been made nearly a year ago by Cadillac chief Johan de Nysschen concerning the fact that a (twin-turbo, of course) eight-cylinder mill would find its way under the hood of the car.
I was unable to get Cadillac's CT6 design team to commit to when a V8 would be forthcoming for the car, but Motoring.com.au had a little more success. The site is claiming that the 4.2-litre eight-cylinder engine will eventually appear on the CT6's order sheet - and that it will feature dual overhead camshafts instead of the pushrod design that has long been a GM staple. Although larger than the 4.0-litre limit that most European brands hew to in order to avoid undue registration taxation, the 4.2L motor continues the legacy of the Northstar V8 that was once available in Cadillac's top-of-the-line sedans and sport coupes.
There's still no word as to when the new engine - which should produce in the neighbourhood of 500 horsepower - will go on sale. However, given its sophistication, it wouldn't be surprising if the 4.2-liter TT ended up motivating not just the CT6, but a potential future flagship - or even the rumoured mid-engine Chevrolet Corvette that is also in the pipeline.
