2017 Porsche Macan: Another Turbo Engine Added to the Lineup

Published on March 23, 2016 in New York by Alain Morin

When it appeared on the market for the 2015 model year, the Porsche Macan was offered in S and Turbo trim levels, both equipped with turbocharged V6 engines. That’s German humour. As usual, Porsche quickly added more variations of their compact SUV. Their luxury SUV, must we add. There’s now a diesel version that’s exclusive to European and South-American markets as well as the GTS.

Now, at the New York Auto Show, Porsche just presented a new version of the Macan equipped with a four-cylinder engine—also turbocharged. Note that I just wrote Macan. No S, Turbo or GTS moniker. A base Macan, that’s what we’re talking about here. Porsche Canada will be retailing it for $52,700, which is $6,500 less than the Macan S. And, just to point out how broad Porsche’s buying public is, $33,100 less than the extroverted Macan Turbo.

A sign of the times, this four-banger engine develops 252 horsepower and 273 lb.-ft. of torque from a displacement of just 2.0 litres. That’s not bad at all, even if we’re quite a step down from the Turbo version’s 400 hp.

For its base Macan, Porsche is claiming a 0-100 km/h sprint in 6.5 seconds and an average fuel consumption of 9.3 L/100 km on the highway. Its top speed is pegged at 229 km/h. The SUV’s all-wheel drivetrain is motivated by a seven-speed, PDK automated gearbox. In the manufacturer’s documentation, it is also mentioned that this variant of the Macan is the lightest SUV ever produced by Porsche, tipping the scales at 1770 kg (3902 lbs.).
