Four Nissan NNMCs at NYIAS
No, this isn’t a secret code used by Nissan to develop a supercar. It’s simply an acronym designating the demonstration at the New York Auto Show of electric-powered microcars for urban mobility. Nissan brought over four variations of electric microcars called Nissan New Mobility Concepts, derived from the Renault Twizy that will be distributed in Canada sometime this year.
This initiative is an effort to raise the public’s awareness of “micromobility,” which consists of tiny, environmentally friendly cars that could reduce traffic in urban areas. Not only are these vehicles small—about 225 cm, or roughly four-tenths the length of the new Nissan Titan pickup—but they allow two adults to freely drive around town.
This two-seat city car needs 3.5 hours to fully charge its battery pack. It has a top speed of 40 km/h and has a range of 60 km, which is enough to drive around at a decent clip while enjoying a range that will satisfy the needs of people who live in the city. In addition, the vehicle can be parked perpendicularly to the sidewalk, and three of these Nissan runabouts parked side by side take up the same space as a conventional car!
Apart from this demonstration in New York, Nissan Future Lab, which is responsible for the deployment of these vehicles, signed an agreement last October with Scoot Networks. The latter is a scooter rental company that will add 10 NNMCs to their fleet in San Francisco, a city who traffic and parking problems are similar to those of New York City. The cars can be rented for USD$6 for a half-hour or USD$80 a day.
In New York, each of the four microcars presented will be painted a different colour.
