2017 Nissan Titan: Another Member of a Growing Family

Published on March 29, 2016 in New York by Denis Duquet

The Nissan Titan XD and its Cummins diesel engine created quite the buzz when it burst on the market at the end of 2015. Its dimensions place it between its rivals' 1500 and 2500 series pickups—and give it an edge in the eyes of many buyers. So much so that units were flying out of dealerships like never before. However, the XD was just the first step in a plan that includes many others.

The second step began at the New York Auto Show on March 24th with the unveiling of a “regular” version that poses a serious challenge to the other pickups in the 1500 series. The models targeted are the Ram, Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra, the Toyota Tundra and, of course, the leader of the pack, the Ford F-150. These vehicles represent 85% of the pickup market. The first available units will be Crew Cab versions, while the King Cab and regular cabs will be offered later.

Note that this new variant of the Titan does not share the XD’s chassis. At 579.3 cm long, it’s 37 cm shorter than the XD. However, both vehicles are 202 cm wide.

The Titan will be available in 4x2 and 4x4 versions and with three bed lengths: 5.5, 6.5 and 8 feet. Just like the Titan XD, the Titan will have five trim levels: S, SV, PRO-4X, SX and Platinum Reserve.

A more fuel-efficient engine

Don’t take this the wrong way, Nissan, but the old 5.6-litre V8 was a tad thirsty. This time, Nissan engineers are enthusiastically emphasizing that this engine is much more fuel-efficient while offering good performance with 390 horsepower. This gasoline engine will also be used in the Titan XD and the Armada. It is paired with a seven-speed automatic gearbox. A V6 will be offered later.

Like the XD, the Titan is assembled at the plant in Canton, Mississippi, while the engine comes from Decherd, Tennessee. It will hit the market sometime this summer.
