A Ten-Speed Automatic Transmission for the 2017 Ford F-150

Ford recently announced details for the new 10-speed automatic transmission and revisions to the twin-turbo, 3.5L EcoBoost V6 that will power the 2017 F-150 this fall.

This will be the first time a 10-speed transmission will be available in a mass-production vehicle. According to Ford, this will give the truck better fuel consumption numbers and faster acceleration than the outgoing six-speed gearbox. Also, it supposedly won’t affect towing capacity. Ford also points out this transmission is the first one to feature an aluminum casing.

The new generation of Dearborn’s EcoBoost twin-turbo, 3.5-litre V6 will offer more power and torque than any of its rivals, diesel or gasoline-powered. Torque goes up from 420 to 450 pound-feet. This engine features two injectors per cylinder, which helps fuel economy and power delivery. The turbos were reworked and the turbines are now lighter, helping them spool faster. This is also the first time Ford uses an electric wastegate on their turbo-equipped engines. Finally, the manufacturer announces they tweaked the start-stop system.

While upgrading the EcoBoost engine and developing the new transmission, Ford registered no less than 20 patents and invested millions in its plants.
