Autonomous Cars in Ontario: One Year Later

Published on July 8, 2016 in News by Frédérick Boucher-Gaulin

Last year, Ontario announced legislation changes to become the first Canadian province to allow testing of autonomous vehicles on public roads. Since most of the country’s automotive industry is located in Ontario, it makes sense for them to try and accommodate these latest technologies. The province also wanted to try and attract new talents with this incentive, since their automotive sector has been losing steam in the last few years.

One year later, Reuters asked the question: how many manufacturers have used Ontario's roadways for testing self-driving cars?

Not a single one.

This isn’t to say Ontario isn’t attractive for high-tech researchers, but California has been allowing autonomous-vehicle testing for quite some time now. Even Canadian businesses like Magna International chose not to take Ontario’s offer right now.

Still, Ontario isn’t disappointed: despite the fact that they haven’t received any official requests, they say their program gathered lots of positive interest.
