Mercedes-AMG C 63 Coupe packs up to 510 horsepower
Mercedes-AMG has unveiled its rendition of the 2016 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe, the latest version of the tuning division's best-selling model.
Based on the new C-Class Coupe that will go on sale in Europe in December, the Mercedes-AMG C 63 Coupe will make 476 horsepower and 479 lb.-ft. of torque, while the stouter C 63 S version will make 510 horsepower and 516 lb.-ft. of torque.
Both AMG variants are powered by the twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 engine that is also found in the 2016 Mercedes-AMG GT S.
The gearbox is a seven-speed dual clutch automatic, and comes with AMG DYNAMIC SELECT that allows drivers to choose from four different transmission modes.
The C 63 S adds a "Race" mode.
Proportionally, the AMG coupe is largely the same as the non-AMG version, with wheel arches that are 64 millimetres wider up front and 66 millimetres wider out back, and a hood that is 60 millimetres longer.
Under the skin, Mercedes-AMG said the C 63's structure "has been reinforced in key areas to transfer and compensate" for the "extreme longitudinal and lateral forces" developed through the hopped-up powertrain and suspension.
The C 63 S Coupe accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds, while the C 63 Coupe does it in four seconds—marginally quicker than the sedan version.
Mercedes-AMG credits the wider tires—255 millimetres in the front, and 285 millimetres in the rear—and the shorter-legged ratios in the model-specific rear axle for shortening the sprint to 100 km/h.
The car's top speed is electronically-limited to 250 km/h, though the AMG Driver's Package ups that to 290 km/h.
The Mercedes-AMG versions of the C-Class Coupe are set to go on sale in the spring of 2016.
