Porsche unveils 600-horsepower Mission E electric sedan

This is the Porsche Mission E Concept.

It packs more than 600 horsepower, sports all-wheel drive and all-wheel steering, and runs from zero to 100 km/h in under 3.5 seconds.

And with four doors, it offers room for four adults.

Oh, and it's electric.

Unveiled by Porsche at the Frankfurt auto show, the Mission E is a true Tesla hunter and the brand's first pure electric four-seat sports car.

Powered by a pair of permanent magnet synchronous motors similar to the ones used in Porsche's Le Mans-winning 919 hybrid, the Mission E makes 440 kilowatts of electrical power, or the equivalent of more than 600 horsepower.

Porsche didn't provide battery specs, but said the Mission E has a driving range of more than 500 kilometres and can be charged to 80 per cent of capacity in 15 minutes using the car's 800-volt port.

Alternatively, the car can be charged using As a conventional 400-volt charging station, or through inductive charging by using a floor-embedded coil that transfers energy to a coil on the Mission E's underbody.

The latter seems like a bit of a pipe dream, at least for now, similar to the wireless charging capability of the Audi e-tron quattro concept unveiled in Frankfurt.

For all the technological advancement showcased by the Mission E, the car's design could be an indicator of the direction the automaker is heading with future Panamera generations.
