It's official: After a successful inaugural campaign in Quebec in 2015, the Nissan Micra Cup will expand to Ontario in its second season.

Nissan Canada president Christian Meunier made the announcement at season-ending gala in Montreal.

"We knew the Nissan Micra Cup was a great idea but the level of excitement and enthusiasm for the series, as well as interest in participating, far exceeded our expectations," Meunier said in a statement.

"The affordability of the series attracted a diverse group of drivers in the first season, and demonstrated that it's not only a great bridge from karting to car racing, but it's also a series for those who always (dreamed) of racing."

Meunier said he hopes expanding the racing series to Ontario will attract more drivers to the series.

The first season saw 12 races completed over six weekends at circuits across Quebec, including Circuit Mont-Tremblant and Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, home of the Canadian Grand Prix, the only Formula One stop in Canada.

For the second season, the series will expand to eight race weekends, with three in Ontario and five in Quebec.

More details about the 2016 season will be released in the coming months.
