Toyota has announced that production of its RAV4 compact crossover will replace the Corolla sedan at its plant in Cambridge, Ont., starting in 2019.

The automaker, which first announced in April that it planned to shift production of the Corolla to a new plant in Mexico, said the RAV4's move to Cambridge will make Ontario "a North American hub for sport utility vehicles."

The RAV4 is currently built at Toyota's plant in Woodstock, Ont., while the Lexus RX is built at one of Toyota's two plants in Cambridge.

The other Cambridge facility currently pumps out 1,000 Corollas daily.

Nearly 3.5 million Corollas have been built in Canada to date.

The RAV4 will continue to be built in Woodstock, while Toyota said production of a hybrid version of the popular crossover would also make its way to Ontario.
